In 2013, Dr. Chris Bowerman received her doctoral degree in Clinical-Forensic Psychology from Alliant International University – Fresno. Throughout graduate school, she completed several practicums focused on the evaluation of adolescents and adults represented by the Fresno County Public Defender’s Office. Additionally, she completed practicums focused on the assessment and treatment of sexual offenders in the community and incarcerated women with severe and persistent mental illnesses. She also specialized and trained in the specialty area of psychopathy. Dr. Bowerman received her undergraduate degrees in Criminology – Law Enforcement and Psychology from California State University – Fresno. During this time, she worked on a five-year research project that resulted in the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA). She also received her master’s degree in Forensic Psychology.
Dr. Bowerman completed her pre-doctoral internship at Minnesota Sex Offender Program (MSOP), a division of the Department of Human Services (DHS), where she treated and evaluated civilly committed male sexual offenders. During this time, she was entitled Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the area of Psychopathy. In this role, she provided specialized assessment and treatment recommendations for clients determined to express high levels of psychopathy, trained colleagues on the assessment, interpretation, and treatment of psychopathy, and wrote assessment and evaluation templates that were implemented into MSOP policy. Following graduation, MSOP hired Dr. Bowerman to lead their assessment and evaluation department at the MSOP-Department of Corrections (DOC) Site. She provided specialized evaluations on incarcerated sexual offenders, treatment and risk recommendations, and provided supervision for colleagues and predoctoral interns.
Throughout her career, Dr. Bowerman has practiced in various community (outpatient) and inpatient settings where she has provided various treatment and psychological evaluations for adolescents and adults presenting with a wide range of legal and mental health concerns. In 2018, Dr. Bowerman opened a private practice in Northern Minnesota where she provided clinical and forensic assessment services to government agencies and on a contract basis. She has completed a wide range of evaluations for courts and associated professionals including diagnostic assessments, psychosexual evaluations, criminal competency evaluations, violence and sexual violence risk assessments, commitment evaluations, and Commitment Appeals Panel (CAP) evaluations focused on civilly committed sexual offenders transitioning back to the community. She has regularly served as an expert witness for the Minnesota courts.
Dr. Bowerman conducts an array of clinical and forensic psychological assessments and evaluations, including general diagnostic clarifications (e.g., personality, mood, substance abuse disorders, etc.); criminal competency and responsibility; violence and sexual risk; psychosexual; and, commitment determinations. No. Due to the lack of insurance companies paying for forensic evaluations, all services are billed directly to the client or through the client’s third party (i.e., council, government agency, etc.), whichever is agreed upon. Payment expectations and plans can be discussed in more depth and determined at the outset of each referral.
Dr. Bowerman evaluates adults, ages 18 years and older. Referrals can be made independently or through a third party.
